My PDF didn't import correctly

Usually the PDF is a scanned image rather than selectable text, so there is nothing for CloakFeed to extract.

My PDF didn't import correctly

This usually means the PDF is a scan — a photograph of a page rather than real text — so there are no words in the file for CloakFeed to pull out.

Quick fix

Open the PDF in any other app and try to select a sentence with your finger. If nothing highlights, it is a scanned image and CloakFeed cannot extract the text from it. Open the imported item, open its menu and choose View original PDF to read it as-is.

If that didn't work

  1. Check the file actually opens elsewhere — a truncated or partly downloaded PDF will fail here too.
  2. If the PDF is password-protected, remove the password and import it again (+ on Home › Import a file). CloakFeed cannot open a locked file.
  3. If the text imported but the layout is scrambled, the PDF is likely a multi-column or heavily designed layout. Reading order in those files is often ambiguous; View original PDF shows the page as the publisher laid it out.

Still stuck?

Every imported PDF keeps its original file, so View original PDF is always available even when extraction goes badly. If a file that plainly contains selectable text still fails, email privacy@cloakfeed.com and say which app produced it.
